Ukrainian emblem smuggler falls foul of Russian protectionism Russian customs officers have seized a batch of plastic Russian Federation state emblems from a Ukrainian national who was trying to take them into Russia illegally, the press-service of the State Customs Committee told the RIA-Novosti news agency on Friday. ''Employees of the Orlov customs directorate have detained a citizen of Ukraine who tried to take several dozen plastic emblems into the country illegally,'' the committee said in a statement. The value of the counterfeit goods is estimated at 324,000 roubles. A criminal probe has been opened into the case of smuggling under Article 188 of the Russian Criminal Code. It remains to be seen what exactly the Ukrainian intended to do with the fake state emblems and why he hadn’t asked for permission to bring them across the border, especially considering where he was heading.
