Bomb disposal experts in the west of Russia have removed a powerful explosive device from a rural railway bridge, local authorities have reported. Given the very real terrorist threat in Russia, and throughout the world, the competent bodies launched an investigation to track down the saboteurs. It turned out, however, that Chechen rebels had nothing to do with the bomb. Much to the surprise of the police, they discovered that patriotic Russians had mined the bridge…over sixty years ago when the region was overrun by Nazi troops.
The 10-kilogram bomb, equipped with a detonator, was unearthed during repair work to the bridge, located between Vyazma and the city of Bryansk. An excavator literally dragged the bomb from the ground, though luckily, the device did not explode. A special team from the Regional Civil Defence and Emergencies department defused the bomb and found 40 more blocks of TNT in the ground, weighing a total of 8 kilograms.
Local war veterans have confirmed that, judging by the ''style'' of the bomb, it had been planted by partisans at least 60 years ago.
