Three residents of Russia’s internal republic of Chuvashia – identical triplets Vladlen, Roman and Ruslan – realized from an early age that they could use their striking similarity to their mutual benefit. Even when they grew up and became inmates of Russia’s prisons two of the brothers did not abandon their childish mischief.
In 1992 Roman, while visiting Ruslan in prison, exchanged clothes with his brother so that he could take a break from his cell. But Ruslan, upon becoming Roman, decided that he preferred life on the outside and refused to go back. He even befriended Roman’s girlfriend. Within a year though, Ruslan, unable to stay out of trouble, found himself back in jail, this time under his brother’s name.
In the meantime, the real Roman, having served out his brother’s sentence, went to Moscow. He was soon back inside though, doing time as Ruslan. After serving his new sentence, he returned home to Chuvashia, where a meticulous investigator noticed that the fingerprints in his case file were not actually his.
The real identity of both brothers was only established after a recently conducted examination.
