Fishy coffin seized in South Russia Smugglers from Russia’s Far East city of Khabarovsk have resorted to ever more elaborate - albeit undignified -means of transporting their lucrative merchandise. 280 kilograms of black-market salmon roe was discovered at Krasnodar airport… in a coffin. The press service of the Interior Ministry’s Main Directorate for Transport and Special Transportation said in a special release that the coffin, properly marked as ‘cargo 200’ (a military and aviation term for dead bodies), had arrived in Krasnodar from Khabarovsk at the other end of the country after a nine-hour flight. Local police who made the discovery said the people accompanying the coffin had all the necessary documents on them, including the coroner’s confirmation of death, the way-bill and even a form stating that the cargo had been checked before departure. In actual fact the coffin contained 280 kilograms of illegal salmon roe. The police suggested that the roe had been produced at one the Far East’s unlicensed factories. Let’s just hope that Khabarovsk residents opening tins of salmon roe don’t get any nasty surprises. Interfax   Back to main page
