A regional court in the central Russian city of Samara has passed sentence on a bus driver who killed his boss. Vyacheslav Ovcharenko poured a bucket of petrol over Gennady Pavlov and set him alight after the manager withheld 870 roubles (about $28) from the workman’s wages for a broken wrench.
The incident took place in the town of Kinel in Samara Region. The regional prosecutor’s office reported that on July 8 this year Gennady Pavlov, the director of the municipal bus park, signed two orders. One order deprived bus driver Ovcharenko of a bonus because 31 roubles ($1) extra was found among the money from the tickets he had sold. The other order was to withhold 870 roubles from Ovcharenko’s salary for a broken ratchet wrench.
When the driver received his paycheck (and the average wage in the bus park is only 3,000 roubles, just under $100), he disputed the decision and demanded at least to get the broken tool back. The manager, however, refused even to do this, which was apparently the last straw for Ovcharenko.
He ambushed his boss Pavlov near the doors of the office building, pouring a bucket of gasoline over him and setting his boss on fire. He then got into his car and drove away, without even waiting to see the outcome. Other drivers, who happened to be nearby, tried to save their manager and one of them even burnt his hands, but to no avail – Pavlov died in hospital soon afterwards.
Traffic police detained Ovcharenko near his house four hours after the fiery vengeance. The bus driver was sentenced to fourteen years in prison.
