Russian Oxana Fedorova, Miss Universe 2002, has been stripped of her title. An official notice terminating the contract was sent to her last week. The organizers of the pageant told Gazeta.Ru that Fedorova had broken several of her contractual obligations. The title now goes to the runner-up from Panama.
The official reason for breaking the contract was Fedorova’s continued refusal to perform her duties as Miss Universe, which, the organizers say, harmed their reputation and cost them hundreds of thousand of dollars. The New York office of the Miss Universe organization confirmed that Fedorova had refused to attend several key events.
''It is too bad it didn’t work out better with Oxana,'' said the owner of the Miss Universe show, US media magnate Donald Trump.
Just four months after winning the prestigious beauty contest, the stunning 24-year-old Russian police officer has lost her title, and some say, her award-winning figure. The Ananova website reported on Monday that Fedorova had gained 15 pounds (about 7 kilograms) and this had aroused suspicion among the organizers that she was pregnant.
The faculty of the St. Petersburg University of the Interior Ministry, where the ex-beauty queen is currently a postgraduate student, has said that they did not believe that Fedorova is pregnant. But they also admitted that they knew nothing about the severing of Fedorova’s contract.
Representatives of the ‘Miss St. Petersburg’ pageant, where Fedorova was a finalist in 1999, said they were sure that the ex-Miss Universe 2002 was perfectly aware of the competition rules. “From a business ethics’ point of view her pregnancy might be considered a problem, but on the other hand, Russians have their own mentality and, unlike Americans, they do not measure everything in terms of money.”
