Russia has carried out a show of strength in the disputed waters of the Caspian Sea. However, instead of battleships from the Caspian Flotilla, it was a member of Russia’s upper house of parliament that cruised across the inland sea. 45-year-old Igor Morozov, a member of the Russian Federation Council for Ryazan Region, swam a total of 124 nautical miles, or 230 kilometres in six days, the press service of the Federation Council reported on Monday.
Before becoming a senator Morozov was a KGB officer. He served in a special divers’ force trained for sabotage operations, which belonged to the SVR – the Foreign Intelligence Service. The recent trans-Caspian swim called ''Operation 44th parallel'' was organized by veterans of his unit.
A total of eight people took part in the swim; the oldest 65 years old. The swimmers started from the coast of the Russian republic of Dagestan and finished in the Kazakh port of Shevchenko. Local authorities and Russian diplomats from the Consulate General greeted the swimmers on the shore. All the participants of the swim are reported to be in good health and will soon return to Russia, most probably by boat.
