A new specialized enterprise has been set up in the oil capital of Western Siberia – the town of Tyumen. The Spirt-tekhprom company has established a refinery, but not your run-of-the-mill oil refinery so typical of the region – this one uses bootleg vodka. The final product is technical alcohol and the company has been granted a licence for its production, storage and sale.
The regional inter-departmental commission for ethylene production and turnover has reported that this year alone the police discovered and closed 11 illegal refineries that produced bootleg vodka. 643 litres of alcohol and 4,000 decalitres of bootleg liquors were confiscated.
Technical ethylene is a rather cheap product. Even with raw material coming in for free, though, it will probably take some time for the new refinery to break even. But the Tyumen police do not expect that the amount of confiscated spirits will decrease over time - Siberia is a cold place with a severe lack of entertainment facilities – in other words, a bootleggers paradise
