''I would rather say that the State has a "club" that hits only once. But hits on head. ... If one day somebody really infuriates us we will use our club straightaway.''
Russian President Vladimir Putin gave an exclusive interview to the French newspaper "le Figaro". He expressed his view on Russia's foreign and interior policy including Chechen war, Middle East conflict, fight against Russian mafia and corruption.
Putin and foreign policy. "Russia has changed its foreign policy concept. We are not trying anymore to dictate our will to other world states. We are still ready to collaborate on democratic basis on all international processes, but we have no wish to get involved in all the conflicts: we have enough problems ourselves to resolve. We will intervene if a conflict is a concern of us or if an involved side asks us to help work out a peaceful solution."
Putin and Chechen conflict. "Shamil Basaev, a Chechen field commander, declared some time ago his intention to send 150 rebels to the Middle East. If Russia did not carry out the antiterrorist operation in Chechnya, how many rebels would Basaev send? How far would he go in his expansion aspirations? I have absolutely clear opinion on this issue - criminals must be punished. There is only one way to accomplish that - to hand them over to justice. If the operation to beat the terrorism in Chechnya fails, it will spread over the whole Russia's territory and will overstep its borders too.
Putin And Russian Oligarchs. "They are interested in "freezing" the previous situation. They are trying to keep control over mass media and intimidate politic power in Russia. I would not say that there is a struggle between the State and the Oligarchs. I would rather say that the State has a "club" that hits only once. But hits on head. We have never used it before, we have only demonstrated it. It was enough to draw the attention. If one day somebody really infuriates us we will use our club straightaway. One must not blackmail the State."
